The types of residence permits in Turkey vary according to how the person entered, their legal status in Turkey, and the reason for and continuity of their stay. In this article, we review the types of residence permits in Turkey and the most important details for obtaining them, in the order of the following table of contents:

Short-Term Tourist Residence (For Tourism Purposes)

Turkey is the only country in the world that grants this type of residence permit, due to the great diversity of tourism in Turkey, which cannot be covered within the relatively short visa period, compared to the distances, cities, regions, exhibitions, museums, islands, and mountains that must be visited.

Student Residence Permit in Turkey:

Student residence is one of the most important types of residence permits in Turkey, as the student residence permit in Turkey is granted only to students at universities and institutes/colleges, whether private or public. The student residence permit is not granted to school students, whether in public or private schools — they are only granted a short-term tourist residence permit, even though the reason for the residence remains study in Turkey.

Property-Based Residence Permit (For Property Owners, or What Is Known as Immovable Assets):

  • Earthquake insurance for the property on which the residence permit will be based, known in Turkish as (DASK)

  • A copy of the title deed for the property on which the residence permit will be based (the deed or ownership document)

  • The detailed apartment address, linked to an official document with the apartment owner, known in Turkish as (NUMARATAJ), obtained from the municipality the property belongs to — it is preferable to apply for it in the morning working hours, before 11 a.m., so that you can obtain the document on the same day.

  • A document proving that the property is still registered in its owner's name and has not undergone any change, known in Turkish as (TAPU AKTİF KAYIT), obtained from the Land Registry Directorate the property belongs to. Note: there is currently an electronic system through which you can obtain this document without going to the Land Registry Directorate, but the information must be updated and the title deed information linked to the Turkish residence permit number after it is issued.

  • In some cases, a birth certificate from the home country is requested, certified by the home country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the consulate in Turkey, along with a sworn translation and certification by a notary public and the Turkish governor's office, according to the city of residence. Short-Term Family Residence Permit:

Q: Who is eligible to apply for a short-term family residence permit in Turkey?Hallak Company always gives you reliable answers. The family residence permit is granted in only two cases:

  • The foreign husband or foreign wife holds a work residence permit or work permit — accordingly, family members (the spouse and children under the age of 18) obtain a family residence permit.

  • The husband holds Turkish citizenship, or the wife holds Turkish citizenship (the spouse obtains a family-type residence permit).

  • The spouse's official residential address (address registration), known as Adres Kayıt.

  • A bank statement for the spouse and a certificate of employment from the company they work for may be requested.

A note from Hallak Company: a holder of a family residence permit through marriage to a Turkish citizen is eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship after completing 3 years.
